In early 2001, to facilitate the opening of the French electricity market, EDF gave an undertaking to the European Commission to give access to generation capacities in France, in the form of contracts conveying the right to purchase energy.
These contracts, with durations between 3 and 48 months, are being sold at auctions conducted at regular intervals (approximately every 3 months).
At each auction, EDF will offer a volume of contracts corresponding to the renewal of capacity which is about to expire in order to continue to make available 5,400 MW.
EDF conducted a 36th electricity generation capacity auction on Wednesday 9th June 2010.
