EDF conducted a 35th electricity generation capacity auction on wednesday 24 February 2010.
In this auction, EDF offered:
1,105 MW of VPP products (1,055 MW base load and 50 MW peak load) with deliveries starting on January 1st 2010 and with the following durations :
- for VPP base load products:
3, 6, 12, 24, 36 and 48 months.
- for VPP peak load products:
3, 6, 12, 24 and 36 months.
EDF capacity auctions beyond 2006
In 2001, EDF undertook to grant access to generation capacities for an initial period of 5 years, starting from the 7 February 2001, date of the Commission's Decision, approving the EDF/EnBW transaction (cf. Case COMP/M.1853 - EDF/ENBW).
In September 2006, with the agreement of the European Commission, EDF implemented two minor changes to the capacity auction process with a view to making it simpler. The European Commission also authorised EDF to enlarge the range of products auctioned by introducing a four year baseload product for a trial period of one year starting in September 2006. The EDF undertakings were formally and officially amended accordingly.
Following completion of this trial period with the June 2007 auction, the Commission decided in July 2007 to authorise EDF to continue to offer this product as part of its capacity release programme.

Should at any given time in the future a termination of the auctions be considered, then EDF would favour a progressive phasing out of the volumes, at a pace and modalities that ensure a smooth and orderly functioning of the market.
To ensure the necessary visibility and anticipation for all participants in the auctions, any further change regarding the capacity auctions will be communicated sufficiently in advance, as has been the case for the recently implemented changes.
Parties wishing to obtain further information on the EDF capacity auctions are encouraged to register their interest as soon as is practicable and in any case sufficiently in advance of the deadline for application to qualify for that auction.
